IoT for Healthcare: Smart Physiotherapy

IoT and Cloud Computing are very promissory technologies regarding patient monitoring and information management especially for particular case of physical rehabilitation. In this context, the presentation includes a short description of the existing IoT technologies and me and my group in the field of IoT for healthcare particularly related to the design and implementation of smart objects and environments for physical rehabilitation and performed signal processing focussed to extract metrics that can be used to characterize the physiotherapy process.

Contemporary challenges to power quality in ship systems - metrological perspective

This paper deals with some contemporary challenges to power quality in ship systems, observed from metrological perspective. Two basic aspects, assessment of power quality and improvement of safety of shipping are taken into account. In the process of power quality assessment, the existing ambiguities and gaps are shortly analyzed and discussed, with underlining the related metrological aspects. The ways of the safety improving related to power quality on ships are described and analyzed into two layers: technological solutions and staff competences, with appointing the metrological aspects...

History of IMEKO TC4 – Second Part

This paper is a logical and complementary carrying on of the previous history of IMEKO Technical Committee on ‘‘Measurement of Electrical Quantities” (TC4) from 1979 to 2002, written by Mario Savino and presented during the TC4 Symposia in Kosice, Slovak Rep., 8-10 September 2010 and in Natal, Brazil, 27–30, September 2011. After a brief summary of the beginning of the IMEKO TC4 and of its genesis, this paper deals with the scientific and organizational progress in IMEKO TC4 from 2003 to 2016. The paper considers all the TC4 Symposia and World Congresses organized in those years, with a...

“Intelligent” Controller Algorithm for Load Distribution Enhancement of IEEE 802.11 INTER-WLAN Traffic

This paper analyses the possibility to have a dedicated signaling channel for triggering load balancing mechanism based on relevant specific traffic parameters analysis (e.g. throughput, EIRP, Antenna Gain). Compared to classic algorithms, the signaling channel brings the advantage of distributed “effort” between Access Points and Controllers. Experiments were performed with Matlab and the results show the network performance enhancement in terms of Load and Throughput. The proposed signaling channel shows effectiveness of the load distribution enhancing also the network performance.

IEEE 802.11 INTRA-WLAN Load Balancing Algorithm for Network Performance Improvement

The present work focuses on creating a QoS mechanism (throughput oriented) which will optimally allow integrating applications and traffic parameters in general. This mechanism adapts an organizational model to a technical load balancing model based on Controller “intelligence”. Physical parameters (Antenna Gain, Transmitted Power, RSSI, Bandwidth, and Load) are inputs used for triggering the balancing mechanism which will increase the WLAN throughput value. The experimental results show the proposed algorithm can improve the network throughput up to 50% compared to algorithms using number...

Uncertainty Reproduction of the Three-phase Voltages System’s Asymmetry Analysis

Methods of reproduction of one-phase alternative voltage is widely known in measuring techniques. Developers apply the same methods to reproduce electric power quality indexes (EPQI) of three-phase networks, which consist of direct, reverse and zero symmetrical sequences. However these parameters depend not only on the amplitude of one vector of voltage of three-phase networks but on amplitudes of all of them and also on the phase angle between them, which is not taken into account by developers. It generates substantial disparity between the real uncertainty and uncertainty, caused only by...

Behaviour of an Electrospun Sputtered Strain Gage Working in Various Supplying Conditions

In the paper, the characteristics of a strain gage sensor built using electrospinning and sputtering technologies, working under dc and ac supplying conditions are presented and discussed. Using the above technologies instead of classical deposition techniques may lead to increasing the sensor sensitivity because of enhancing the Poisson effect on the metallized nanofibres. Even if the manufacturing technology is not yet well established, it is much promised as idea, as the sensitivity of the sensor is proved to increase several hundreds of times with respect to the classical similar devices...

Modeling the properties of bio-composites obtained from plastic and wood waste for building applications

In this study, bio-composite material obtained from recycled polyethylene (RPE) blended with wood flour (WF) used as fillers in presence of different percentage of compatibilizer agent as maleic anhydride (MA) was studied in an attempt to modeling the properties of composite for building applications as wood plastic composites (WPCs).
