COLORIMETRIC POLYMER SENSOR FOR DETERMINATION OF CHROMIUM (VI): COMPARISON OF ESTIMATION METHODS OF THE VISIBLE COLOR CHANGES

The paper describes an application of a kind of optical analytical method, digital color analysis (DCA), using colorimetric polymethacrylate sensors (optodes) in order to determine Cr (VI). The optodes are made of optically transparent polymethacrylate matrix (PMM) with 1.5-diphenylcarbazide immobilized. The developed optode can be used in determination of the anlytes using solid-phase spectrophotometry and calculating color coordinates as functions of absorbance spectra. Also color coordinates can be represented as basic color (e.g. RGB) data after the optode image digitizing. Then one can...

STUDY ON REALTIME DETECTION METHOD OF ANTI ICING ADDITIVE CONCENTRATION IN JET FUEL BASED ON MICRO FLUID CHIP AND ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRUM ANALYSIS

Ethylene glycol methyl fan is the main components of Anti icing additive of jet fuel. the volume percent of Anti icing additive in fuel is 0.1~0.15%. It is a typical detection problem of trace substances in complex organic phase to detecting the content of only 0.1 to 0.15% of the ether substances in jet fuel comprising of by hundreds of kinds of organic matter , so there is no on-line measurement method by now. In this paper , a means is offered that combine micro extraction technology and on-line optical spectroscopy technique . by this way, anti icing additive concentration can be...

OPTICAL FIBRE GRATING-BASED SENSORS FOR HUMIDITY MEASUREMENT: DESIGN AND APPLICATIONS

This paper presents the results of work done on the development, evaluation and testing of several different designs of fibre optic (FO) grating-based sensors for humidity measurement, evaluated in the laboratory and beyond. The basic operation and design of the sensors is reported, as is a comparison of the use of both optical Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) and Long Period Grating (LPG) systems as the basis of an effective sensor device. Applications of sensors of this type are discussed as is the tailoring of the devices to specific requirements for industrial measurements.

NETWORKING TOOLS FOR STANDARDIZATION

In order to systematize and networking data and information useful in measurements for food and nutrition, ENEA is developing a web application based on open source cloud technologies. This application will permit to inventory the available resources on Reference Materials, Proficiency Testing schemes and Reference Methods for food analysis, collecting in a single web-site all the available information for standardizing and harmonizing food analysis.

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTIPARAMETER-REFERENCE MATERIAL FOR FOOD CONTACT MATERIAL TESTING AND CHARACTERIZATION

This paper reports a feasibility study for the development of a Multiparameter-Reference Material (RM) to be employed for food contact material testing and characterization. Two test batches were prepared starting from a film of Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) and from the same film coated with a silver layer (Ag-PLA) and then they were submitted to optical, morphological, mechanical and chemical characterization. The final objective is to obtain a RM to be certified for chemical composition, to be accompanied by reference values for migration tests (also for evaluating nanoparticle release) and...

SHORT RUN CONTROL CHARTS AS AN INTERNAL QUALITY CONTROL TOOL

A novel methodology based on short run control charts was developed to establish simultaneous intra and inter daily control of instrumental blank samples for trace elements analysis through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Eleven inorganic trace elements were analyzed, where chromium was selected to illustrate the methodology. The use of joint control charts, both based on the Quesenberry Q-statistics, revealed to be a suitable tool in detecting possible instrument contaminations as well as evaluating IPC-MS stability.

IMPEDANCE SPECTROMETER FOR APPLICATION IN BIOLOGY AND FOOD QUALITY CONTROL

The electrical impedance spectroscopy is widely used in material science, because this quantity and its frequency spectrum are important features of any material. This method became popular in measurement of biological and biochemical objects, including foods, especially in the specification of material ingredients and their concentration. This application requires quite different approach to the construction of impedance spectrometers, because they are usually designed for measurements in laboratory conditions, while many biological materials are investigated in situ or are processed under...

FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW REFERENCE MATERIALS FOR MYCOTOXIN ANALYSIS IN CEREALS

This paper reports a feasibility study for the development of new Reference Materials (RMs) for mycotoxin analysis in cereals. In particular, different batches were prepared starting from lots of un-contaminated durum wheat grains, durum wheat flour, soft wheat grains, and soft wheat flour. Then, an aliquot of each raw material was artificially inoculated with Fusarium graminearum, so as to obtain DON and Ac-DON contamination. By mixing in different ratio the mycotoxin contaminated materials and the un-contaminated materials, test batches of (durum and soft) wheat grains and flour at three...

EARLY DETECTION OF FUNGI IN GRAIN USING CO2 LEVEL MEASUREMENT

Experiments were performed for a possible application of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) measurements for early detection of a fungi spoilage in grains. Grain model systems were prepared with different quantities of fungal pathogen Fusarium culmorum. The study found that the contaminated grain samples’ CO 2 respiration rate was higher compared with the uncontaminated grain at the same moisture content levels. In addition, it was observed that the Fusarium spp. contaminated grains’ CO 2 respiration rate increased and remained steady after the initial grain moisture and contamination level increase.
