The paper proposes a mobile measurement system for urban pollution monitoring that can be installed on public ground transportation vehicles. It exhibits some important features that make it suitable for the purpose: low cost, reduced dimensions, autonomous power supply, and measurement strategy able to minimize the measurement uncertainty. To this aim, the measurement system implements data fusion techniques that operate spatial and time data integration. The general architecture of the proposed measurement system is at first described then, starting from laws and directive applied in the...

In this paper a low cost real-time ARM-based energy management system is proposed. It is conceived as part of a distributed system that measures the main power system quantities and give the possibility to manage the whole power plant. An integrated Web Server allows to collect the statistics of power consumptions, power quality and is able to interface devices for load displacement. The device is characterized by easy access to the information and the combination of a smart meter and data communication capability allow local and remote access. In this way it is possible to manage the power...

The paper presents for the first time a comparative study of long-period gratings (LPGs) written by UV irradiation and by electrical arc discharges and applied to hydrostatic pressure measurements. These gratings were inscribed in a highly photosensitive boron co-doped fiber that can be considered as a suitable platform for LPG writing using either technology. The experimental transmission data for the manufactured LPG devices fit well when compared to the simulations we carried out in parallel. As a result of each of these writing processes, we were able to obtain a remarkably good quality...

A controller for surface plasmon resonance biosensor has been designed and applied for analysis of aqueous substances. A core provides the necessary signals for control and sensor actuation. Using a 16 bits A/D converter to convert the analog signals generated by the sensor and polynomial algorithm, the sensor output noise are reduced around 37.5%. The digital data are sent to computer for processed and displayed. Details regarding the physics construction of the controller and its programming, including system validation tests presented in this paper.

This paper presents the development of a system (hardware and software) applied to the evaluation of high voltage (HV) substations energized grounding grids. The diagnosis system is based on the measurement of the HV substation surface potentials. The measurement allows the identification and localization of eventual grounding problems (high values of ground resistivity, corrosion, discontinuity). The system hardware was developed using a PIC® microcontroller that perform the measurement of several surface potentials and stores the measured values in a digital memory. In the sequence, the...

A practical criteria for stating Pass/Fail conformance when calibrating an instrument and comparing the measured results against manufacturer specifications, considering regional and regulatory requirements. A flexible calibration result reporting includes Pass/Fail conformance statements, which is especially true when serving a global market. This paper explores the different requirements or guidelines in standards documents, such as ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006, ISO/IEC 17025:2005, ILAC-G8:1996, and EURAMET/cg-15/v.01 and presents a non-obvious, yet simple method for expressing statements of...

Impedance sensors are found in many industrial applications. Multipoint and fast impedance measurement is required for some applications, for instance in the investigation of multiphase flows or the measurement of distributed sensors. In this paper, we describe a new highspeed multichannel impedance measuring system, which may be used for the evaluation of capacitance and resistive loss of multiple sensors. System is based on measurement at two selectable single frequencies. The system was evaluated against reference measurement showing good agreement.

The Energy-Based Method (EBM) provides both direct and indirect estimates of the amplitude of a sine wave. In this paper the accuracies of these two different estimation procedures are compared when some of the most commonly used cosine class windows are adopted. The comparison is performed by taking into account the effects of the algorithm error, spectral interference, and wideband noise. Based on the comparison results some conclusions of interest in the algorithm design phase are drawn. Such conclusions are finally validated by experimental results.

The aim of this work is to present the AC-DC transfer calibration system of Voltage and Current Laboratory (Latce) of brazilian's Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Normalização e Qualidade Industrial (Inmetro). Latce is responsible for the realizations of both the volt and the ampère in accordance to SI, and for its dissemination through the network of accredited laboratories in Brazil, so as to assure traceabiblity of the national standards.
