STUDENT-CENTRED COURSE ON DYNAMIC STATE ESTIMATION

The design of a course on optimal dynamic state estimation is described. The accent of the course is on practical issues: How to design a well-functioning state estimator in a practical situation where we have to deal with uncertainties about the model that describes the physical process and the sensory system, and without having groundtruth data? The adjective “student-centred” refers to a number of characteristics of the course: students will have an active role, they are faced to real world problems that they have to solve, they are stimulated to work together, etc. The paper finalises...

TRAINING OF COMPUTER-CONTROLLED MEASURING SYSTEMS

The training of computer-controlled measuring systems is an important part of education activities in measurement technology for engineers. This paper shows in its first part essential preconditions and special possibilities to make training effective. The unity of theoretical and experimental works will be demonstrated by using a specially designed system. Standard measuring instruments completed by special software packages are used for an uncomplicated application. Different training courses, for example, signal and data processing, instruments programming, measurement of electrical...

A SIMULATION COMPLEX FOR INSTRUMENT SPECIALIST TRAINING

A computer-based simulation complex intended for training instrumentation users (process operators, instrument specialists, measurement engineers and students of technical universities) on the basis of simulation models of typical control objects is described. The methodology of computer-based training, which provides high level of learning and positive transfer of skills of safe and efficient work with measurement and control systems, is applied. The experience of the training complex’s application is discussed.

SIMULATION MODELS IN INSTRUMENT SPECIALIST TRAINING

An approach to computer-based training of instrumentation users based upon simulation models of typical control objects is described. The approach provides effective learning and positive transfer of instrumentation operation skills. Simulation models of typical processes are described as well as the emulated measurement, continuous control and discrete control systems.

STOCHASTIC SIGNAL CONVERSION: LEARNING INTERACTIVELY

The aim of the course signal conversion is to learn designing a hybrid measurement and data processing system with a specified overall signal-to-noise ratio. The noise is caused by various error sources in the measurement chain: bandwidth limitation, sampling, quantisation and reconstruction. The education method is based on simulation tools, used interactively by the students to learn quickly the consequences of changing design parameters on the quality of the output signal.

METROLOGY EDUCATION AT MACHINERY ENGINEERING FACULTY

The curricula at Faculty of Automobiles and Heavy Machinery Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology went a significant evolution since 1990 as a result of the emergence of new technologies and engineering methods as well as in response to labour market and state educational policy. General view on the latest curricula is given with the indication in which courses elements of metrology are also thought. Next special attention is paid to the metrology course (15 h lecture + 15 h tutorials + 30 h laboratory). The course gives fundamental information on classical metrology topics such as...

HYPERTEXT TRAINING AID IN MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY

Software can be used to help students to learn concepts, structures, calculations, and use of measuring instruments. Such tools are useful particularly in situations, where there is very limited time for contact teaching. A careful design according to research on the studying process is essential. Experience shows that self-study repetition by using software training aid is fruitful for learning theoretical issues.

A DIDACTICAL DEVICE FOR INVESTIGATIONS ON A QDW SYSTEM

Very hard studies are often accomplished in order to deeply understand the features of complex system. Mathematical models represent a useful approach for developing theoretical considerations. Anyway experimental set up, allowing heuristic confirmation of the results obtained via the theoretical approach must be considered a fundamental step toward a full understanding of the considered system. In this work a quite innovative environment for experimental investigation on the Brownian Motion system is proposed. A virtual instrument allowing easy of use and flexibility to the collection of...

MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY – INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The concept of dimensions and units has facilitated and accelerated the application of computers in physics and technology. Behind all the details that have been contributed in all those applications hides a philosophical question: what tells us the result of our efforts? An attempt for an answer was the “Epistemology” of Eddington, an attempt that was not continued. On the other hand, the digitalization of our world makes enormous progress. It not only seizes the world of numbers but also the world of language. What importance has the theory of language, semiotics, for measurement...

FROM COMPUTING WITH NUMBERS TO COMPUTING WITH WORDS - FROM MANIPULATION OF MEASUREMENTS TO MANIPULATION OF PERCEPTIONS

Computing, in its usual use, is centered on manipulation of numbers and symbols. In contrast, computing with words, or CW for short, is a methodology in which the objects of computation are words and propositions drawn from a natural language, e.g., small, large, far, heavy, not very likely, the price of gas is low and declining, Berkeley is near San Francisco, it is very unlikely that there will be a significant increase in the price of oil in the near future, etc.
