Comparison Of Evaluations Of A Comparator Type Force Calibration Machine

The paper present examples of evaluation of uncertainty of a comparator type force calibration machine, either by calibration of force calibration machine using transfer standard transducers or via independent traceability of the reference force transducer. Results of evaluations are presented for reference values from various sources, different mounting conditions and different traceability links.

Static and Dynamic Identification of Multi-Component Force and Torque Sensors

An experimental setup for characterizing the dynamic and static behavior of multi-component force and torque sensors is presented. In this setup, a 6-DoF force and torque sensor based on the principle of electromagnetic force compensation (EMFC) is used to apply static and dynamic force and torque vectors to a sensor to be identified. Several characteristics of the sensor under test, such as linearity and dynamic behavior can be evaluated. The system presented here can generate forces and torques with up to 7 N and 0,35 N·m and has resolutions of 10 µN and 0,3 µN·m respectively.

Validity of Extrapolation Based on Polynomial Approximations

This paper describes a method to find an appropriate extrapolation with its corresponding uncertainty for any sensor in its full working range with the information provided by calibrations in partial ranges lower than the full working range. It is based on the assumption that the relation between the sensor input and output can be described by means of polynomial approximations. The method includes several conditions that are established in order to ensure a valid approximation for the extrapolation. The work is a contribution to the EMRP project “Force traceability within the meganewton...

Torque Traceability For Nacelle’s Test Benches: A Design Proposal

This paper describes CEM’s design proposal for a new torque transfer standard. This research arises from the new EMPIR project (14IND14: Torque measurement in the MN·m range”), which aims to provide traceability in the MN·m range for nacelle test benches. Improving the quality of these measurements will lead to a more accurate diagnosis of wind turbines’ performance and a better efficiency in wind power generation.

A Research Laboratory for Coastal and Sea Water Pollution Monitoring

This paper aims to describe the activities of the Research Laboratory “Marine measurement for energy production from renewable sources” of the University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria, Italy. The research project has been funded by the European Union with the funding scheme PON 2007-2013. The Laboratory has been projected and developed in order to carry out research activities in the field of the Energy Production from Renewable Sources and Energy Valorization. The Laboratory activities concern in addition the environmental coastal monitoring and water pollution monitoring. The paper...

Monitoring of Extreme Temperatures to Evaluate the Interaction Between Climate Change and Human Health in Coastal Areas

Climate change can affect coastal areas in a variety of ways. These zone are sensitive to sea level rise, changes in the frequency and intensity of storms, increases in precipitation, and warmer ocean temperatures. In addition, rising atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) are causing the oceans to absorb more of the gas and become more acidic. This rising acidity can have significant impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems. High temperatures are increasing in recent years. Extreme weather events, such as heat waves, are one of the hallmarks of global climate change. In light...

Preliminary Meteorological Analysis of Selected Coastal Erosional Events in Southern Italy

Two meteorological models, Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), were tested for Southern Italy extreme events related to coastal erosion phenomena. Simulations are compared with observational data for some meteorological surface parameters: temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure. In addition, WRF model performance were tested also at different vertical levels, by a comparison with rawinsonde data.
