Contribution of the Spectral Interference from the Image Component to the Discrete Spectrum of a Sine-Wave

In this paper the analytical expression of the contribution of the fundamental image component to the discrete spectrum of a sine-wave weighted by a cosine class window is derived. It is then analysed for some commonly used windows in the case when the considered Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) samples fall either inside or outside the band defined by the window spectrum main lobe centred at the sine-wave fundamental frequency. From the achieved results some conclusions about the behaviour of the image component contribution to the discrete spectrum of a sine-wave are drawn. The accuracies...

Noninvasive System of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Focused and Deep

The Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive stimulation process which induces an electric field in the brain, to excite or inhibit groups of neurons. However, the current technology reaches only the motor cortex, about 1.5 cm deep, thus greatly restricting the areas of stimulation. This paper proposes a new geometry of TMS coil to reach further internal brain structures, such as the basal ganglia, with improved focality.

Measurement of Amplitude Ratio and Phase Shift between Sinusoidal Voltages with Superimposed Gaussian Noise

The paper presents basic description and some simulation results of a correlation method which together with the fractional delay sampling technique can be applied to measurements of the complex amplitude ratio of sinusoidal voltages with superimposed Gaussian noise. The method allows reduction of the influence of the white noise on the result of measurement.

Low-cost multi-channel synchronous data acquisition system based on compressive sampling approach

Nowadays the most of the technical applications require the acquisition and the processing of signals coming from many sensors disseminated in the measurement field. Typically, to reduce the cost of the overall measurement process, the above-mentioned tasks are performed by devices as microcontroller, low cost Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), Field Gate Programmable arrays (FPGA), and so on. This is even more true when smart-sensors, or wireless sensor networks, applications are considered. These devices are characterized by some main limitations concerning with the reduced quantity of...

Analysis of NetCDF-4 and HDF-5 scientific file formats for the data archiving of an ITER fast plant system controller prototype

New fast plant system controllers are being designed and developed for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). They require to manage and to process massive data that is being acquired at high sampling rates. This data has to be archived for being posteriorly analysed in order to rebuild several aspects of the experiment. Our group is currently involved in different works related with ITER, and more concretely related with their fast control technologies. ITER fast plant system controllers will require data archiving, and based on ITER requirements our group developed a data...

Parameter Extraction in Multi Step Exponential Signal

Multi-exponential function is used to model phenomenon or signal in several applications. The parameter extraction of each exponential is based on the assumption that no constant component is part of the signal. In the paper the superposition of exponential signals and step signals starting in different time instants is taken into consideration, and a procedure based on windowing is pointed out to estimate the parameters of each exponential function in addition to the delay of each step. Numerical tests asses the correctness of the procedure.

Design and Implementation of a Hybrid MPPT technique based on the Scan of the Power vs Voltage input characteristic of the inverter

The adoption of a Hybrid MPPT (HMPPT) technique is mandatory in PV applications operating under mismatching conditions. It is called Hybrid because it is neither only Distributed (on the PV modules) nor only Centralized (on the inverter). In this paper it is shown how to properly optimize an HMPPT technique based on the periodic scan of the Power vs. Voltage characteristic at the input of the inverter in order to locate the optimal operating value, from the energetic efficiency point of view, of the bulk inverter voltage. Therefore, numerical simulations and experimental measurements on a...

Precision timing in TDMA-based Wireless Sensor Network through IEEE 1588 standard

This paper proposes an energy-efficient time synchronization scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) based on the IEEE 1588 standard. Although a number of methods have been studied for time synchronization of WSNs, some applications require high precision time synchronization with very low power consumption. This paper presents a reduced implementation of IEEE 1588 precision time protocol (PTP) for WSNs. Within the proposed synchronization approach, a sensor node is synchronized using the timing message generated by a master node synchronized with GPS. This paper also presents experiments...

An FPGA-based System for Real-time Monitoring of Voltage Harmonics

In this study, a real-time monitoring system has been prepared by using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) in order to monitor three phase voltage harmonics instantly. In this monitoring system, a signal input card has been designed for the purpose of transferring three phase voltage signals of the network to the FPGA card. Harmonic values of the voltage signals belonging to each phase have been instantly calculated with the 128 floating point FFT algorithm embedded in the FPGA card. The obtained harmonic values are transferred onto computer with the RS232 communication protocol created...

Double Squirrel Cage Induction Motors a New Approach to Detect Rotor Bar Failures

The purpose of this paper is to present a diagnosis technique, for rotor broken bar in double cage induction motor, based on a combined use of frequency sliding and wavelet transform analysis, to isolate the contribution of the rotor fault components issued from vibration signals in a single frequency band. The validity of the proposed diagnosis approach is not limited to the analysis under steady-state operating conditions, but also for time-varying conditions where rotor fault components are spread in a wide frequency range.
