In aerospace applications, Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is becoming increasingly attractive by offering low-cost solutions, simplicity and flexibility. This research faces the problem of disturbance induced by high energy particles on electronic devices. Based on detailed analysis of this phenomenon, the work is divided into two parts: in the first part evaluation of effects of the Single Event Upset (SEU) has been carried out with the aim of determining diagnostic techniques and the mitigation of this disturbance, taking into account the fact that...

This paper is focused on Reliability Block Diagram generation with the aim of providing a reliability prediction in the early stages of Oil&Gas product development, in particular for gas turbine auxiliary systems. Reliability assessment is achieved with a dedicated tool named RBDesigner that semi-automatically generates a RBD starting from the sketch of thermal-hydraulic systems and provides the most important reliability parameters. Furthermore this paper shows a new approach to assessing reliability of standby redundancy architectures that are widely used in Oil&Gas applications.

This paper present and discuss a method that, starting from the information of a public weather station and a reference panel, gives usefu1 information about the efficiency of a photovoltaic plant. The aim of this paper is to give a method to analyse the effects of the dust on the panel surface comparing, for a given solar radiation level, the energy production of a reference panel estimated in clean condition with the energy produced by the panel in actual condition. The novelty of the method is based on the simplification of the monitoring system devoted to the energy evaluation...

The reliability evaluation of a system is an important task. Mean Time Between Failure and Failure Rate can suggest useful information about diagnostic aspects, maintenance and investments. This is especially true in case of photovoltaic systems. A Power Optimizer reliability is estimated by MIL-HDBK-217F and Siemens SN29500 reliability prediction models.

Oil & Gas environment, during the last ten years, has experienced the need to improve product performance covering aspects going from its increased functionality, maintenance, reliability and safety, towards reduced time delivery and cost. Some of them have been required by customer and some of them are indeed essential to meet even more stringing international regulations, imposing high standard of product quality. Nowadays the product process improvement has scored by implementing lesson learnt, rose during the manufacturing phase or by means of feedback coming from field. It’s easy to...

This paper deals with the design and realization of a measurement system for estimating power consumption of workstation computers during the execution of benchmarks. The measurement system and the test bench architecture, designed to measure the instantaneous power consumption from the power line of a workstation motherboard, are presented. Then, the calibration procedure used to compensate systematic effects and to characterize the power measurement system is described. Five benchmarking applications have been performed on an Intel Pentium 4 processor and the corresponding results are...

The paper offers a comprehensive study performed in order to design a fault management system, intended to be applied to monitor a Wireless Active Guardrail System (WAGS). An architectural overview of the WAGS sensing capabilities and a list of its possible faults are reported. Two stages of fault detection: (i) sensing node built-in fault detection, and (ii) server side built-in fault diagnostic, are argued and proposed for the future implementation.

The aim of this work is to present the activities planned by the Electric and Electronic Research Group of Polytechnic of Bari, Department of Electric and Information Engineering, under the strategic project named “Magna Grecia — Rafforzamento Strutturale“, funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) within the PON-REC (National Operating Program Research and Competitiveness) 2007- 2013. The project aims to cooperate with many Apulia Regional Authorities (mainly with ARPA Puglia, the authority for environment protection) to build a network of laboratories for...

The paper presents a study, via Monte Carlo simulations, of the effect of truncation in sequential sampling plans. In sequential sampling plans, truncation is needed to avoid an excessive sample size, which can occur in same cases: on the other hand, truncation affects both the Operating Characteristic (OC) and the Average Sample Number (ASN). In the paper, the approximate analytical formulas used in the literature to determine OC and ASN are compared with the actual curves obtained via Monte Carlo simulations, taking into consideration three different truncation thresholds. Besides, a...

In the industrial world the need to guarantee a long-life product becomes imperative. Life testing of electromechanical parts under nominal operating conditions may be time- and resource-consuming, making sometimes, such procedures expensive and impractical. As a result, technologies for accelerated life testing have been developed, to design high level stress tests (e.g. temperature, voltage, pressure, corrosive media, bad, vibration, etc.). However, not all industries have access to the expensive equipment, such as thermal chambers and shakers, usually used for accelerated life tests....
