DETERMINATION OF pH VALUES FOR REFERENCE POTASSIUM HYDROGEN PHTHALATE BUFFER IN WATER-ETHANOL MIXTURE (MASS FRACTION 50 %)

Currently, the metrological traceability of pH measurements for bioethanol is not ensured due to the lack of ethanol based reference buffer solutions. This situation leads users to calibrate their pH-electrode by means of aqueous buffer solutions, creating serious problems of reliability of measurement results. The potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHPh) solution with molality 0.05 mol·kg -1 was studied as a possible primary buffer in water-ethanol mixture (mass fraction 50 %). The study was carried out in the temperature range from 15 °C to 35 °C. For this purpose, the potentiometric method...

CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENTS OF ATMOSPHERIC HALOGENATED COMPOUNDS AT JEJU ISLAND, KOREA FOR ESTIMATION OF EMISSION FROM EAST ASIA

Ambient concentrations of halogenated compounds have been analyzed every two hours using the "Medusa" cryogenic pre-concentration system with gas chromatograph and mass selective detector (GC-MSD) at Gosan (Jeju Island, Korea) from Nov. 2007. Our analysis results identified country based emission ratios and correlation patterns among measured species. The emissions of these compounds in East Asia estimated by interspecies correlation method account for over ~30% of global emissions, and emphasize the importance of atmospheric measurement in this region.

MAGNITUDE OF CHANGE IN VOLUME OF HIGHLY PRESSURIZED GAS CYLINDER DURING VENTING

Buoyancy effects due to cylinder expansion are taken into account as an important source of uncertainty in weighing for the preparation of primary or standard gas mixtures by gravimetric methods. Although linear cylinder expansion upon pressurization is known, reliable information on changes in the volumes of gas cylinders is very scarce. We present newly useful information on the magnitudes of changes in the volume depending upon different cylinder materials and volumetric capacities during gas filling and venting. We also found that he literature estimate of about 20 mL for the magnitude...

A NEWLY DEVELOPED KRISS OZONE STANDARD REFERENCE PHOTOMETER

A new standard reference photometer (SRP) for ambient ozone measurement was developed and its performance was characterized. The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement ( GUM ) approach was followed to estimate uncertainty budget for the KRISS O 3 SRP.

NONCOVALENT FUNCTIONALIZATION OF GRAPHENE BY WATER SOLUBLE POLY (ETHER ETHER KETONE)

Water dispersible graphene has been prepared by noncovalent functionalization of graphene oxide using sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). Both the chemical and electrochemical method has been employed to noncovalently attach the SPEEK macromolecules on the surface of graphene. In chemical methods, SPEEK macromolecules are attached on the surface of graphene oxide followed by reduction using hydrazine monohydrate. On the contrary, electrochemical exfoliation of graphite to graphene occurs in presence of SPEEK macromolecules in aqueous medium under a potential difference of 30 V. The...

DEVELOPMENT OF CERTIFIED REFERENCE MATERIAL FOR LEAD, ARSENIC AND MERCURY IN COSMETIC

In response to cosmetic safety issue, the accurate measurement of the heavy metals in cosmetic is particularly important. In order to guarantee the traceability and reliability of the related measurement results, the cosmetic certified reference material was developed by NIM, which consisted of the ingredients of basic cream and the appropriate amount of chemical compounds of lead, arsenic and mercury.

OPTICAL MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR QUALITY CONTROL OF PLASTICS

An optical system to measure the degree of curing of extruded plastics will be presented. The setup consists of a mercury vapour UV–lamp and filters, so that the fluorescence and the phosphorescence of the specimen can be measured. In the luminescence spectrum the information about the curing ratio is quantified. Theoretical disquisitions and preliminary measurement results will be presented in this contribution.

DEVELOPMENT OF PROFICIENCY TESTING SCHEME FOR MEASUREMENTS OF TOXIC AND ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN RICE AS AN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT

A proficiency testing scheme for inorganic analysis and its application to agricultural products are presented and discussed to show how Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), the National Metrology Institute of Korea, has provided reliability and traceability of measurements in safety and quality of food through the reference materials. With collaboration between KRISS and the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS), the proficiency testing scheme was developed based on ISO/IEC 17043 for international harmonization. The material, which was...

METROLOGY INNOVATION MODEL APPLIED TO THE VALUE CHAIN OF GREEN FOOD PRODUCTION

This paper describes how innovation in metrology is interlinked with innovation in products and processes and strong implications of this fact for green growth. The Taxonomy of the ways of innovation in metrology and a model based on the study An Assessment of the United States Measurement System have been used. The project consists on the validation of an innovative technology for green and effective growth of crops developed by one of the authors of CBM™. This is done through three blocks of tests and measurements in equal sets of metrological disciplines. The study presented is a...

CHEMICAL MIGRATION – AN INVESTIGATION OF PHTHALATES IN FOOD PACKAGING AND THEIR MIGRATION INTO FOOD

Migration of substances from food contact materials (FCMs) has become an important food safety issue. Key FCMs such as plastics are of interest due to their wide use and the need for migration testing of chemical residues such as phthalates. Of further interest is the investigation of nanoparticles in food, their sources, potential for migration, and possible health effects. This paper describes the current measurement approaches for migrating chemical residues such as phthalates, and proposes future investigation of the presence/absence of harmful migrating nanoparticles in food packaging.
