Influence of Adaptor on the Calibration of Inductance Standards

Influence of the adaptor on the calibration of 100 µH inductance standard has been studied using two different homemade adaptors of BPO gold-plated brass (BPO-Au) and banana-copper (BN-Cu) as a function of torque. The inductance (L) and the contact resistance (RC) showed an exponential decrease against the increasing torque from 25 cN·m to 150 cN·m. The measured L and the calculated equivalence series resistance are dependent on the type of adaptors as well as the RC. The analysis of RC and measurement uncertainty of L implies that the BPO-Au adaptor with low RC is suitable for the...

An Automated Test and Measurement System for Calibration of Industrial Flowmeters

This paper presents a low-cost test and measurement system that can be used to test and calibrate industrial liquid flowmeters. Different flowmeter types, with different working principles, from different manufacturers, can be easily installed and calibrated in a flexible way. The implemented prototype includes a software component that is tailored for laboratory test and calibration of volumetric or mass flowmeters. The final part of the paper includes several simulation and experimental results.

A novel type of precision amplifier for strain gauge based transducers

If accuracy matters, mechanical quantities such as force, torque or pressure are almost exclusively realized by transducers, which are based on strain gauges. To exploit the potential of static measurements the demands on precision amplifiers steadily grow. This paper gives some details to progress of the precision amplifiers used.

Parameterization of Nonlinearity for Efficient Estimation in ADC Testing

In Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation of ADC parameters, the estimation of static transfer characteristic has key importance. However, the description of static transfer characteristic demands to handle numerous values. Without parameterization, the nonlinearity of an N-bit converter can be described using 2^N - 1 integral nonlinearity (INL) values. Nevertheless for real ADCs the INL values are not independent, the information regarding the nonlinearity can be compressed. This paper enumerates multiple methods to measure and approximate the static transfer characteristic of the ADCs, and...

PRBS non-idealities affecting Random Demodulation Analog-to-Information Converters

This paper aims to the characterization of non-idealities of the Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) mixing the signal input in a Random Demodulation Analog-to-Information Converter (RD AIC). Once the PRBS has been characterized, a simulation analysis has been carried out in order to evaluate the error that each component of the jitter affecting the PRBS causes on the AIC output. Results show that significant error is also caused by deterministic jitter components that could be included in the AIC model.

Experimental comparison of two mathematical models for Analog-to-Information Converters

The paper deals with the experimental comparison of two models for Analog-to-Information Converters (AICs). In particular, a linear model in the time domain and a linear model in the frequency domain have been considered and evaluated for the Random Demodulator AIC architecture. The aim of the present paper is (i) to evaluate the error introduced by both the AIC models, such to determine what best matches the actual implementation, and (ii) to determine the possible error in reconstructing the waveform due to the model.

Self-calibratable Adaptive Sub-ranging ADC Insensitive to Amplifiers Gain Errors

The paper proposes a variant of adaptive sub-ranging ADC capable of self-calibration in presence of the internal amplifiers gains deviations due to technological imperfections. The changes needed to be implemented to make the adaptive ADC insensitive to gains errors, and the procedure of self-calibration that uses the internal DAC as calibration signal source, are proposed. Capabilities of the approach are discussed on the basis of results of computer simulations.

Design and Calibration of Adaptive Sub-ranging ADCs Resistant to Amplifiers Gain Errors

The paper develops a method for designing and calibrating adaptive ADCs robust to internal amplifiers gain errors. As part of the proposed solution, a simple method of postproduction measurement of the actual gain values of amplifiers utilizing the internal ADC, is proposed and analyzed. Efficiency and particularities of application of the proposed approach are discussed on the basis of the results of computer simulations.

Quality Control of Permanent Magnets for Industrial Applications: Integrating Magnetic Field Mapping and Crack Detection

The characteristics of permanent magnets must be carefully controlled when applied in automotive, industrial and consumer products. In this paper we present a novel measurement system for quality control of permanent magnets by integrating magnetic field mapping and crack detection. The novel system is introduced that combines in a single device the features of a magnetic field mapper, the eddy-current measurements and a touch stylus. The magnetic field sensitive area of the 3D Hall probe is 100 x 100 µm; the selectable measurement range is 50 mT - 2 T; the probe positioning accuracy is 2 µm...

Two Ways of Power Substitution for calibrating Thermoelectric Sensors at RF and Microwaves

Thermoelectric sensors reached a dominant application in the commercial power meters at Radio Frequency (RF) and Microwaves (MW), by virtue of their superior robustness, stability and accuracy if compared with other types of power sensors. Furthermore, their performances reveal to be very useful in the realization of broadband primary power standards as a valid alternative to the resistive sensors, i.e. bolometers, in coaxial transmission line, at least. Recent technological improvements allow thermoelectric sensor calibration following two circuital schemes. In simple words, sensors have...
