A New Approach to Generation of Measurement Methods

In this paper two logical levels of the measurement procedure are discussed: physical level, on which the magnitude of a measurand is equated with the magnitude of a material measure; formal level, on which a value is assigned to the measurand. There are three types of logical functions involved in the measurement procedure: introduction of measurand and metric; change of quantity. Depending on the number of particular quantities, two models are proposed: two quantities are involved - measurand and material measure; three quantities are involved - measurand, material measure and one...

Synthesis of the Measuring Scale for Shape of Electrical Signals

The paper presents an application of the linear algebra in the creation of a measuring scale for some class of multidimensional quantities. It shows how important the following two elements are: the domain of objects (signals), and the method of their comparison. In most cases when we change one of those elements or both, the sense of the measuring quantity which is to be defined also changes. The paper shows how to select a set of primary standards and how to generate a set of secondary standards. The standards are modelled by a set of vector bases, and the changed set of standards is...

New Knowledge-based Measurements in Precision Engineering

Aim of the paper is to show practical examples for the definition and application of metrological, particular and virtual objective measurement standards (reference standards) in e-measurements for the solution of complex measurement tasks. The measurement object is a hob with 17 characteristic measurement quantities in shape and position. As a result of e-measurements in a closed e-quality loop the process capability is better than the machine capability.

Jury-Test Method for the Measurement of Perceived Quantities

The measurement of perceived quantities is of great interest in nowadays world, where man often interfaces with machines through his senses. This works presents a thorough investigation of the jury-test methods for the construction of reference measurement scales and for the subsequent development of suitable measurement procedures. Cross-validation of complementray tests is addressed, for assuring the reliabilty of the results, as well as the importance of test protocols and of operators’ interface. As a support to the proposed methodology, two test cases, concerning automotive noises, are...

Fuzzy Nominal Scales

The main objective of a measurement process is to convert the physical state of an entity into an information entity. At a higher level, relations on physical states are also converted into relations between the information entities. Then it’s possible to manipulate the information entities with these relations instead of manipulating the physical states. Nominal scales are scales where the only relation being converted is an equivalence relation. In most applications of nominal scales, the symbolic representation of a physical state is a symbol. An other approach shows that a physical state...

Epistemological Foundations of Measurement

Some notes for a conceptual history of measurement are presented, to introduce the basic positions that have been maintained about the issue that can be considered as the general epistemological problem of measurement: what characterizes measurement with respect to generic evaluation? This characterization, in which three distinct positions are recognized correspondingly to what we call Metaphysical Period, Anti-Metaphysical Period, and Relativistic Period, allows us to introduce and shortly discuss some general issues on the current epistemological status of Measurement Science. The goal of...

INVESTIGATION OF DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF ALUMINIUM FOAM UNDER HIGH-STRAIN RATE LOADING AND COMPARISON WITH CONVENTIONAL ENERGY ABSORBING MATERIAL

The aim of this study is proper description of stress-strain behaviour of the metal foam structure Alporas under high-strain rate loading. Stress-strain response of Alporas specimens is measured during an impact test using a drop tower experiment. Strain of the specimens is evaluated by two independent approaches: i) double numerical integration of acceleration data and ii) digital image correlation technique. Thus, experimental setup is equipped with triaxial accelerometer and high speed camera. Resulting stress-strain curves are compared with behaviour of polystyrene material samples...

DETERMINATION OF ELASTIC AND DAMPING PROPERTIES FOR CLOSED-CELL ALUMINIUM FOAMS USING IMPULSE EXCITATION TECHNIQUE

The damping behavior of metallic foams is excellent. This attribute can be useful in applications in lightweight structures to overcome noise and vibration problems. This paper presents an experimental investigation for determination of elastic and damping properties for ductile aluminum foam (AlMg1Si0.6) produced by the powder metallurgy method. The Resonant Frequency and Damping Analyzer (RFDA), which is a non-destructive testing device to determine the resonant frequency of materials, were used to perform the experiment. Tests were carried out on rectangular bar samples with skin, having...

MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF GLASS FIBER-REINFORCED COMPOSITES

The mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites are essential for the design of new lightweight structures. Therefore, digital image correlation and strain gages are utilized to measure the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of unidirectional and biaxial reinforced glass fiber-reinforced composites in parallel. While the Young’s modulus of unidirectional reinforced samples obtained by the different measurements methods is in the same range, larger deviations occur for the Poisson’s ratio. Furthermore, the influence of embroidered sensors on the stiffness is characterized for...

THERMO-MECHANICAL MATERIAL CHARACTERIZATION OF PHTOTORESISTS WITH HIGH ASPECT RATIO

MEMS made of photosensitive polymers offer new functionalities and applications in the micro world. Additionally to the new materials and advanced technologies the analysis of the thermo-mechanical material properties is required to ensure reliability and lifetime. Under this point of view, an uniaxial micro tensile measuring system has been developed to determine stress-strain-curves, Young’s modulus or Poisson’s ratio. The results will be shortly compared with those of Dynamic-Mechanical Analysis (DMA).
