Methodics of teaching for students – bachelors of applied physics - in the field of metrology and measurements is discussed. Most students make their first experiment and measurement in general physics laboratory works during the 2 nd semester. The PC-simulating of some tools (calipers, micrometers) is used for rapid training. Students learn the principles of computer assisted controlled experiments in the 5 th semester. The objectives are analog – digital and digital – analog converting, Fourier transformation, signal sampling, etc. Students create their own programs for computer-controlled...

This contribution deals with some remarks and hints that could help in the solution of the common question how to conceive and arrange the laboratory exercises on the measurement tasks that are too complex that there is not enough time to introduce, comprehensively explain and practice during laboratory exercise. As an example of such task, the measurement of voice transmission quality of service (VTQoS) in modern telecommunication network (e.g. GSM) is chosen.

An operational quality system is one of the opportunities to demonstrate the technical competence of laboratories in the academic environment. The International Standard ISO/IEC 17025 includes many requirements to such a quality system. A new approach has been developed in which these requirements have been prioritised, taking into account the specific aspects of work and organisation of e.g. a university laboratory. Basic and complimentary requirements have been distinguished, resulting in an initial reduction of the total number of items to be implemented. In addition, a modular system for...

A rule based expert system (ES) has been implemented, which acts as a tutor to measurement scientists and technicians (metrologists) in the calculation of the uncertainty of measurements according to the methodology of the ISO "Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement" (ISO Guide). The ES was implemented with the expert system shell/inference engine, "VP-Expert" (VPX) running in a DOS window. The intended target users are experienced metrologists, who lack the mathematical skills and concepts, particularly in statistical and sensitivity analysis, to implement the ISO-GUM...

A rising demand for specialists in Measuring and Diagnostic Systems (MDS), able to apply multidisciplinary knowledge from measurements, automation and medicine, became the reason for launching the course in this field for students of Biomedical Engineering in Wroclaw University of Technology. The specialists should be trained in system design, development and implementation. The course curriculum and web-centric approach to laboratory equipment is presented.

The big number of management methods has more than 200 expressions with different names. In alphabetical order one can start with ABC management, the abbreviation for adaptive, bioregional & cooperative management [www.orst.edu/instruction] through Theory Z management for the improvement of human resource management [www.an.af.mil/database/research]. Measurement, Instrumentation & Test Management MTM is a newcomer to management science and practice as well as to education & training. The mission of MTM is to bridge the gap between the rigid framework of measurement engineering on the basis...

Multimedia represent an integrated system, enabling contact with users, taking their attention and offering the possibility for informing them. They utilise technical means for simultaneous acting through visual tools, enabling easy and intuitive control through user friendly graphical interface. Key elements of the multimedia include static and animated graphics, sound and text, video sequences. Paper describes introduction of modern information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. Main attention is paid to journey from classical textbook to multimedia educational package....

Interconnected sensor nodes can be used for a long term monitoring of widely spread ecosystems. Individual nodes can be unavailable during the runtime due to a lack of energy, disruption of communication channels, or physical damages of nodes. In this paper, a new approach to transfer messages from nodes to gateways (and optional to flood gate nodes) in such dynamically disturbed networks is presented. The focus is the routing in branched line-structures, e.g. flood barriers. The usage of gradient structures in each node allow tree routing, tree propagation, energy-efficient exploring...

One of the most important reasons for the usage of relatively inexpensive energy-self-sufficient wireless sensor networks is their high reliability. Research in this particular field has been intensified recently. However, most of the proposed approaches have one problem in common: lifetime reduction due to an increased demand on data transmission or packet length. In this paper we propose a new technique for almost reversing the effects of this conflict by system identification and forecasting. Our work focuses on designing a close-to-perfect model for each sensor type and to use this for...

Precision Farming (PF) involves parameters monitoring related to different agricultural systems. This control is mainly based on intelligent techniques such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which can provide periodically data reports via the wireless communication relating sensor nodes to each other. However, sensor nodes are energy constrained and limited to their remaining battery power. Therefore, prolonging their lifetime is consequently an issue to be highly considered. The communication between the nodes including transmissions and receptions is the major source of energy waste. The...
