Aim of this paper is the design and implementation of a system for assisted living and home automation. The apparatus is able to both monitor vital signs of persons with medical problems and automate the home management. Concerning the home automation, the system can manage lighting, actuate the opening of doors and windows, schedule appliances, manage electrical loads, thermo regulators and video surveillance sensors. Hardware of proposed system is based on low-cost ARM processors. Important features of implemented application program are the real-time management of data transmission...

Actually, the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project mission is to endow the scientific and engineering feasibility for fusion energy. Built LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN, ITER has become the largest project in applied superconductivity and, besides its technical complexity, ITER represent a management challenge as it bases on a unique worldwide collaboration of seven partners (China, EU, India, Japan, US, Russia and South Korea), who provide 90% of the components as in-kind contributions. Among ITER components, magnet system for plasma confinement is one of...

Establishing with minimum effort the performances of coated conductors (superconductingbased tapes) in terms of maximum current density is a crucial issue in the optimization of the superconducting material. Methods with minimum requirements in terms of sample preparation (nondestructive) are maximally sought. In this work we review the potential of a contactless microwave technique based on the use of resonators. The technique exploits the intrinsic processes at the heart of the dissipation of a superconductor in order to assess a first, go/no-go quality test for the superconducting...

The paper deals with the problem of estimating measured values in indirect measurements based on complex processing algorithm. To this aim, deterministic sampling of the random variables (modeling the input quantities) is suggested to efficiently estimate expectation and standard uncertainty of algorithm outputs. In particular, the authors propose an enhanced version of the traditional unscented transform to propagate a defined set of statistical moments of the input quantities through the algorithms (even in the presence of non-analytical formulation). This way, it is possible to assure...

This paper aims to present two sensor node prototypes designed to collect information about roadlevel climate. These prototypes are part of a Wireless Active Guardrail System (WAGS). One node was designed to perform multi-sensor measurements, which can provide information about the road surface state, such as dry, wet or iced. The second node was developed to provide a quantitative estimation of visibility grade in presence of fog. In the paper, the detailed hardware structures, the sensing mechanisms and several on-field tests are described and discussed.

Many road applications as real-time traffic monitoring, vehicle counting and speed measurements, environmental and pollution monitoring along the roads, impose accurate time reference of detected events. In the most of the applications, measurement stations are based on distributed architectures in which one node acts as master and the others, defined slaves, have to be synchronized with the master. Generally, the master is equipped with a clock reference based on the Global Positioning System, while the slaves are synchronized with the master by the way of suitable synchronization...

The implementation of GPS systems has allowed the understanding of important facts about the true meaning of time and simultaneity. In fact GPS has became a fundamental source for the understanding of clock behaviour and synchronization, through the considerations of the relativistic effects affecting it. Among these, a very important role is played by the Sagnac effect, influencing the clocks readings. The correct consideration of such effect is fundamental in every synchronization process where the receiver is moving with respect to the source. In this paper we show how GPS system...

This paper presents an automated digital testing system for high-resolution ADC with lowresolution DAC signal. This system mainly comprises a low-resolution DAC (or signal source), a feedback loop circuit, a bias voltage device and a reference voltage source controlled by a digital potentiometer. By the digital potentiometer constantly fine-tuning the reference voltage and joining bias voltage timely, the output of DAC can completely measure all the codes of high-resolution ADC under test. This system solves the problem that low-resolution DAC signal tests high-resolution ADC inaccurately,...

Soil moisture measurements are essential especially in the agricultural field, where it is crucial to guarantee that the optimal amount of water is provided to the cultivations. Most soil moisture measurement systems are local sensors; hence, a multitude of sensors must be distributed all over the field to obtain a comprehensive picture of the soil condition. Starting from these considerations, the present work addresses the feasibility of employing diffused sensing elements (in a wire-like configuration) for sensing soil moisture variations, based on capacitance measurements. To this...

At National Institute of Metrological Research (INRIM) a Selectable Value High DC Voltage Standard operating in the range from 10 V to 100 was realized to cover the absence of high level DC Voltage Standards at voltages upper than 10 V to employ both as Laboratory Standards or traveling Standards for Interlaboratory Comparisons. It A novel ground-mobile electronic technique was utilized. In the first tests the developed Standard showed better noise and stability of the same order of top level DC Voltage and Multifunction Calibrators, widely employed in Electrical Calibration Laboratories....
