THE DESIGN AND INITIAL TESTING OF THE BEAM POSITION MEASUREMENT SYSTEM IN SSRF BASED ON FULLY DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING

This fully digital beam position measurement system is designed both for beam position monitoring and machine research in Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). The signals received from four position-sensitive detectors (PSD) are narrow pulses with a repetition rate up to 499.654 MHz and a pulse width of around 100 ps, the dynamic range of which could vary over more than 40 dB in machine research. By the employment of the under-sampling technique based on high-speed high-resolution A/D conversion, all the processing procedure is performed fully by the digital signal processing...

AN INPUT SIGNAL STATISTICS AWARE DESIGN APPROACH AND EXAMPLES FOR ANALOG-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTERS FOR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Most of the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) nowadays are designed for a specific application and embedded in a System-on-Chip (SoC) instead of a stand alone ADC chip for general purpose. In this case, the ADC input signal statistics is known information, while in different systems it can be far different from others. This observation gives opportunities to design ADCs smartly in a system context to achieve the required system performance at minimal complexity, area and power. In this paper, an input signal statistics aware design approach for ADCs for communication systems is discussed...

HARDWARE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ADC ERROR COMPENSATION USING NEURAL NETWORKS

A compensation technique for Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) based on a neural network is proposed. The implementation is done both in software and in a hardware description language. The latter is targeted for a massively parallel ASIC. The training of the neural network is done by learning a Look Up Table generated by processing the output of the ADC for sine waves inputs. Then, the effective number of bits (ENOB) is computed over a large range of frequencies for the raw data of a 100MS/s ADC and for the compensated data. These results are used to compare various neural network...

A LINEARIZATION STRATEGY FOR UNDERSAMPLING ANALOG-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTERS

The ability of high performance Radar and Broadband Systems to detect weak targets in presence of strong interferers or clutter is given by their Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR). Although the Signal-to- Noise-Ratio (SNR) necessary for detection may be improved by well-known system processing gains, the dynamic range is ultimately limited by distortion terms caused by nonlinear behaviour of receiver components. The Software Defined Radio (SDR) paradigm assigns the Analog-to-Digital Converter a key role in receiver design. For systems using IF- Subsampling, linearity requirements place a...

A LOW-COMPLEXITY ADAPTIVE-THRESHOLD DETECTOR FOR PULSE UWB SYSTEMS

A method for adaptively setting the threshold of an energy detector for Ultra-Wideband radio systems is presented in this paper. The method, which is suitable for low-complexity and low-cost implementation, is based on the estimation of the input noise and interference power. Simulations and experimental results obtained from a prototype UWB system show that the proposed method can adaptively set the threshold of the detector. Therefore it is robust to changes in the interference power, and it can limit the false alarm rate.

ADC DESIGN IN ORGANIC THIN-FILM ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY ON PLASTIC FOIL

In this work an architectural investigation is presented concerning the full integration of ADCs in thin-film organic electronics technology on a plastic foil. From a technological point of view and dealing with a limited number of building blocks available, i.e. often only p-type transistors are available and resistors are not, several ADC architectures are discussed and compared for their specifications and limits. From this discussion a few topologies are left over that are considered applicable up to a certain level. Finally a ΔΣ ADC design is presented in this work and the measurement...

HIGH-EFFICIENCY CASCADE ΣΔ ADCs FOR SOFTWARE-DEFINED-RADIO MOBILE SYSTEMS

This paper discusses a number of techniques to implement efficient cascade ΣΔ modulators intended for low-voltage, wideband, multi-mode applications. Several architectural strategies - such as loop-filter order reconfiguration and concurrency . are embedded in SMASH topologies with unity signal transfer function and resonation in order to improve the performance, while keeping high robustness against circuit errors. The proposed ΣΔ architectures - properly combined with circuit-level reconfiguration and biasing adaptation techniques . constitute a suited solution to implement...

VALIDATION OF A FUZZY DECISION MAKING TECHNIQUE ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY INDEXES MEASUREMENT

In this paper a Fuzzy Decision Making (FDM) technique is presented, making use of an original approach to uncertainty analysis, for the qualification of an environmental measurement process and its associated decision system. The proposed FDM technique leads to take a decision about the quality index overcoming of a warning or reference value; it is based on a model, which has statistical bases and offers an operative instrument that, in accordance with the initial conditions, allows to calculate the erroneous decision probability for settling the metrological characteristics of the...

A MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS IN INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES

In industrial field, one of the most advantages, derived from the industrial automation process implementation, is possibility to regulate process control parameters. It allows parametric optimisation methodologies application. In the paper an innovative methodology for the productive processes qualification based on quality characteristics improvement and on their simultaneous evaluation cost, is proposed. An industrial farm (Leghe Leggere spa) application of the proposed technique is discussed.
