Preliminary Analysis of RGB Images for the Identification of Defective Maize Kernels

In order to investigate the effectiveness of multivariate image analysis for the evaluation of maize defects, RGB images of maize samples containing different percentages of defective kernels were acquired and then converted into colourgrams, i.e., signals codifying colour-related features. Multivariate analysis of the colourgrams matrix showed a distribution of the acquired samples according to the amount of defective kernels.

Innovative At-Line Quality and Process Control Methods in Food and Beverage Industry

In the last few years the quality and process control methods have acquired increasingly importance to ensure health and safety in the food and beverage products. In this paper we present the most important studies in different Food&Beverage sectors made by company CDR. These studies have, as object, the CDR systems with which it is possible to realize a specific quality control directly at-line and monitoring parameters in rapid evolution that need to be controlled in real time.

A New Biosensor Platform For the Detection of AFB1: Real Time Electrochemical Profiling (REPTM) Assay Method

We introduce a new biosensor platform (MiSens) for the detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) based on real time electrochemical profiling (REPTM) assay method coupled with the use of natural and artificial antibodies (polymers) as affinity ligands. Sample clean-up was performed wit aflatoxin-targeted polymer and the samples were then analysed using natural antibody-based MiSens biosensor array.

Traceability Markers in Italian Unifloral Honeys

In this study we carried out the analysis of three varieties of unifloral honey of acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia), chestnut (Castanea sativa) and sulla (Hedysarum coronarium), in order to evaluate the parameters that allow the differentiation of the three varieties of unifloral honey investigated.

Data Fusion Strategies for Food Authentication

More and more often food authentication problems require measuring fingerprinting data on the sample by different analytical platforms. To get full advantage of the multi-platform characterization of the products, the possibility of integrating the information provided by the different data blocks into a single, holistic model (data fusion) should be considered.

Chemometrical Strategies in Order to Solve Different Problems in Food Science

The primary objective of the present study is to show how chemometrical strategies can be useful for processing multidimensional complex non-selective data in order to address issues in the food science. Three different case studies are shown, where different analytical procedures and chemometrical tools were used in order to reach different tasks.

Imaging Techniques: a Rapid Tool for Food Analysis

In the last few decades there has been a continuous increase of industrial applications of image analysis-based techniques, thanks to their ability to monitor quickly and inexpensively both products and processes, and with the advantage of being non-invasive. When performing image analysis, chemometrics is an essential tool for different aims, including data reduction or compression, extraction of useful information, and efficient representation of the most chemically-meaningful features of the analysed scene.

SO2SAFE-ENZYMATIC SO2 Biosensor for Rapid Food Safety Monitoring

BIOLAN is a highly innovative SME that develops and commercializes biosensors for quantitative analysis of food quality and safety parameters. BIOLAN’s technology is based on its proprietary enzyme-based electrochemical biosensor technology platform. Currently, with the funding support of the SME Instrument Phase 2 (H2020-SMEINST-2-2015; SO2SAFE - GA 684026), BIOLAN is working in the miniaturization and industrialization of this technology to enable the commercialization of a portable and user friendly biosensor device and inexpensive, disposable test strips to monitor sulphite levels in foods.

Construction of Disposable Biosensors for Nitrite Monitoring in Food and Beverages

Nitrite salts are regularly used as fertilizers and food preservatives. Excessive levels have raised awareness from public regulation agencies, since nitrite can have an adverse impact on public health and on ecological system. Therefore, it is important to develop sensitive assays to monitor this ion in foodstuff products and water. This work presents a nitrite biosensor based on a highly selective nitrite reducing enzyme incorporated on carbon ink based screen-printed electrodes.

Disposable electrochemical biosensors based on screen-printing technology for malic acid determination in wine

This work describes the fabrication of a disposable electrochemical biosensor based on screen-printing technology for malic acid detection in wine. The new biosensor was constructed using ferricyanide as electrochemical mediator and the Malate Quinone Oxidoreductase (MQO) enzyme. It showed great analytical performance in terms of reproducibility (RSD 4%; n = 5), sensitivity (37 µA/g/l), detection limit (0,33 g/l) and stability on time (1 month at RT). Moreover, the disposable biosensor was successfully applied for the determination of malic acid in wines.
